    Im hoping to take a lesson from you sometime in the future. I'm trying to learn all I can about layout and spacing because its my biggest struggle. I like the angle and proportions here, very pleasing to the eye. And the colors just set it off!

    This is what I’m looking for. Great video ⭐️Can you help me understand making the shape of your S? The top half is elongated and pulls down quite a bit, almost to the bottom, before curving left, almost like a backwards 2. Is there a formula to how the strokes on this letter should be made? Thank you!

    • @JohnKingLetterArt
      @JohnKingLetterArt 11 днів тому

      Thanks! Yes, you start the S as if it's an O, and when you get to just below the 9 oclock point you scoot across to the 4 o'clock mark then just finish the bottom stroke. Then the top right stroke to finish off the S is just like the top right quadrant of an O, you just stop it at about 3 oclock. Hope that helps!

    • @theangrykitten

      @@JohnKingLetterArtWow, thank you! This explanation makes perfect sense - I figured there had to be a formula to be able to be consistent. And there are so many individual styles that I’ve seen with casual letters by painters. You are the best! ⭐️🤩

    I fancy this 👌- correction NEED this. I'm a beginner but was a poster writer in B&Q Store 20+ Yrs ago. I trained as a Graphic Designer 1986 originally before moving to B&Q, but was disillusioned with it. The guy that taught me the Poster Writing was a true Signwriter and a master with the brush, he also had a 12" Yes 1 foot plotter / cutter. I eventually moved into signage and loved it. I was planning on moving to Australia but split with my kids mum so stayed here UK. I've been following your social media for some time and am really fired up to have a go with the brushes. Who knows I might even get to one of your classes 🤞 A pal invited me to LA about 2 yrs ago so ??? 🤷‍♂✌

    B E A U T I F U L ! John I've just spent a small fortune on brushes and I'm not feeling it with the sables I've bought. Could it be that I need slightly shorter hairs ? Each video I watch of yours the hair seems to be quite 'springy' is the best way I can describe it. I've got a Sable one stroke which is fairly easy to control but the Wrights or Lymm Sables are 'floppy' I'm looking at buying your upcoming Block Poster and a brush size 8 of yours any suggestions for which brush would be best for a newbie to practice with ? Pls 🙏

    • @JohnKingLetterArt
      @JohnKingLetterArt 6 місяців тому

      Hey Jezz, it may be you're brushes are long haired which may make them feel a bit floppy if youre learning? Unless its the hair type but kolinsky sable is the snappiest hair. I'd recommend you go with a medium length SWKM size 8 (used in this video) as the slightly shorter hairs provide a bit more snap and are easier to control. Hope that helps mate!

    What about before you use them? Should they sit in oil for some time before use? You have a great lettering channel.

    • @JohnKingLetterArt
      @JohnKingLetterArt 7 місяців тому

      Thanks! Yes its a good idea to oil them a few days before you use them, helps condition the hairs nicely for the paint but I wouldnt say its mandatory. Just good to do if you have the time before using them!

    • @Rock_Whisky
      @Rock_Whisky 7 місяців тому

      @@JohnKingLetterArt Thanks for the advice. I usually wash off the gum that keeps there shape. Then oil them after they air dry. Let them sit overnight before I give them a try. After use i wash them in a dirty jar of mineral spirits then a jar of clean spirits. Finish it all off by storing them in mineral oil. This has been my routine yet for some reason they only seem to last me a short time. Maybe two months max. I’d appreciate your opinion on this. The brush that’s given me issues are the 179Ls. I really like them but Ive been looking into other brands. Perhaps yours lol.

    • @JohnKingLetterArt
      @JohnKingLetterArt 7 місяців тому

      @@Rock_Whisky only thing I can think might be the mineral oil? I have always used neatsfoot oil which is pretty standard and also being an animal oil I think is better for the hairs. Are you leaving them submerged in the oil or just putting oil in the hairs then and storing them back in your box?

    • @Rock_Whisky
      @Rock_Whisky 7 місяців тому

      @@JohnKingLetterArt Yes, I did use mineral oil before and I would leave then in my brush box until use. Could be overnight or later till I would work with them. I did switch to an oil that’s based on animal fats from Von Dago. I have never left them submerged in oil, which is something I should try. I also use to clean them then leave the brush out till I use it. This allowed the brush to dry out, which I see now can be bad for the brush. Now, I rigged up a jar with mineral spirits and a spring (I can send you a pic) so the brush stays wet until I use it. I appreciate your time and advice on this by the way, about how long do you leave a brush submerged in oil?

    • @JohnKingLetterArt
      @JohnKingLetterArt 3 місяці тому

      @@Rock_Whisky I dont leave them submerged in oil. After doing what I showed in the video I'll either put them back in my box or leave them standing up in a jar, hairs up.

      By watching your preview, and listening to your knowledge, how concise you are, can tell the course will be comprehensive and valuable. I have learned through the hard way, many of the subjects you teach, and your spot on! These vital lessons are essential and you seem to know all the keys to being a pro at lettering, understanding, applying etc. I believe the course is worth $500/ but also to someone like myself who already knows allot of this knowledge via decades of learning ( the hard way) I really just want to refresh, overview and to learn some insights I may not know. ( I’m sure many) ..I was thinking a price in the range of $2-300. You may have more people purchasing it.
